The Oracle

The Oracle is a giant geometric illuminated head which reacts to sound. It has custom software that samples the environmental noise to extract the frequencies and beats which are used to influence the LED animations.

The Oracle has gone through a number of iterations, and is now a strong and robust welded sculpture. It has been installed in a number of contexts, from inside a giant light up cube, hanging from a giant Kuka robot arm to surrounded by light up mushrooms connected by tentacles.

It has featured in a music video alongside Sian Cross, and has be presented at Wonderfields, Boomtown Festival and Shambala, whilst creating an impromptu performance space for a number of passing bands and musicians.

The system is a cumulation of a number of years of development of creative technology that drives addressable LEDs from sound processing along with 3D formed mechanical design mindful of effective light diffusion. I have spent time and attention on presenting standard LED strips beyond their typical linear form. Behind the scenes is a network of embedded linux devices and micro controllers which support a bespoke modular and scalable architecture which connects seamlessly with other networked devices for sensor input or actuated output. The development of this architecture has then been translated across to a number of technical projects I have worked on since.

I have worked with singer Sian Cross on a number of projects over the years, but this music video was really the first. We took the Oracle to an unused warehouse in Bristol to create a video which presents a musical conversation between Sian and the Oracle for the song Tell Anybody.
